Baptism is one of the most misunderstood acts in the Christian faith. Some see it as a requirement for salvation; others dismiss it as a mere formality. But when you read the New Testament carefully, baptism emerges as something richer than either of those views — it is a public declaration of a private transformation.
The Greek word baptizo means to immerse, to plunge, to be thoroughly identified with something. When Jesus was baptized, He was not washing away sin — He was identifying with us. When we are baptized, we are identifying with Him: with His death, His burial, and His resurrection. We are saying to the world, 'The old life is gone. I belong to Someone now.'
