What do you do when you do not know what to pray? A reflection on the Spirit's intercession and the beauty of wordless communion with God.
There are seasons of life when the words simply do not come. Grief too heavy to articulate, confusion too deep to name, a longing so vast it collapses every sentence you try to form. In those moments, many people conclude that they are not praying well — or not praying at all.
Romans 8 offers a different picture. Paul writes that the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words, and that He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit. Your silence before God is not an absence of prayer. It may be the deepest prayer of all.
Give yourself permission to come to God without an agenda, without prepared words, without a list. Sit. Breathe. Let your need be the prayer. The God who knows the number of hairs on your head does not need your eloquence — He simply wants your presence.
